A better tomorrow starts today
Sustainability. At Saosis, our vision to help feed the world responsibly means not only helping to grow more food, but to do it in ways that protect the environment, support economic vitality, and enhance communities.
Sustainably feeding an expanding global population is one of the greatest challenges the global community has ever faced. The challenges we face are complex and will not be solved quickly. A commitment to learning and continual improvement is imperative.
We believe we are stronger working together. By collaborating with multiple groups, we build long-term, impactful programs and solutions. Together we can feed the world responsibly and improve the lives of future generations.
The principles that guide our sustainability journey are as follows:
- Applying safety and science to all we do
- Globally minded; actioned locally
- Responsibility building the business
- Measuring results
Environment. Saosis effects meaningful environmental change by creating, implementing and measuring programs to enrich and improve the natural environment in which food is grown. We also work with customers to ensure our products contribute the maximum value to their crops while minimizing nutrient losses to the environment.
Water. Three ways we affect water are when used in operations, discharges, and that, may be affected by nutrient use in fields. We use water in the production and manufacturing of our products. Where possible, we work to recycle and reuse it, including at some of our locations where we use wastewater from municipal treatment plants as process cooling substance. Some locations recycle water numerous times in a closed-loop system. Some cooling water, along with some surface runoff water, is collected in on-site ponds.
We are working with the communities where we have operations to become more efficient in water use. We also work with provincial and local governments to develop new uses and discharge standards for the Industrial area, where our production facilities are located.
Keywords: Water is a chemical compound with the chemical formula H2O. A water molecule contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms that are connected by covalent bonds. Water is a liquid at standard ambient temperature and pressure, but it often co-exists on Earth with its solid state, ice, and gaseous state, steam (water vapor).
Water covers 71% of the Earth’s surface. It is vital for all known forms of life. On Earth, 96.5% of the planet’s water is found in seas and oceans, 1.7% in groundwater, 1.7% in glaciers and the ice caps of Antarctica and Greenland, a small fraction in other large water bodies, and 0.001% in the air as vapor, clouds (formed of solid and liquid water particles suspended in air), and precipitation. Only 2.5% of the Earth’s water is freshwater, and 98.8% of that water is in ice and groundwater. Less than 0.3% of all freshwater is in rivers, lakes, and the atmosphere, and an even smaller amount of the Earth’s freshwater (0.003%) is contained within biological bodies and manufactured products.
Soil Health. Nutrients play a unique role in replenishing our soils and sustaining the world’s growing need for food, fiber fuel. By working with growers, industry associations, government, and researchers, Saosis strives to ensure nutrients are applied in amounts that sustainably replenish soils.
Nutrients also contribute to the farmer’s ability to generate profits that keep growers in business. Saosis is proud to be part of an industry that provides these life-sustaining resources and maintains the quality of one of the world’s most precious resources – our soil.
As crops grow, they take up nutrients from the soil. When the plants are harvested the nutrients in the soil are depleted. If nutrients are not replaced, the soil quality and productivity decline. This is a gradual process but can become problematic. It is thought to have contributed to the decline of many early civilizations. By working with growers, industry associations, government, and researchers, Saosis strives to ensure nutrients are applied in amounts that sustainably replenish soils.

Land, Habitats & Wildlife
Land, Habitats & Wildlife. There are a few ways that Saosis can mitigate our impacts on land: reclaiming and remediating sites that we acquire, preventing spills and properly disposing of hazardous waste.
Saosis provides products that optimize food, fuel and fiber production on existing farm land allows us to conserve greater space for wildlife habitat and recreation. We also work with regulators and industry experts to extract raw materials in a manner that will minimize long-term environmental impacts and enable reclamation of the land.
Community. Saosis works in partnership with stakeholders in the community to be a good neighbor protecting, growing and enriching the communities in which we operate. In this spirit, we strive to build and maintain positive relationships within our communities.
As we engage with community leaders and residents, we identify what works well in addition to finding opportunities for improvement. We strive to be a good neighbor throughout every stage of our presence in a community.
Public safety. Our production facilities have emergency response procedures that dovetail with community response abilities, and we conduct specialized emergency response training for local fire departments. We collaborate with other industry, community residents and governments on emergency preparedness committees.
Our organic fertilizer retailers are committed to the safety and security of their products, employees, and the communities they serve. Each retail facility is different, but they all play a vital role in helping to produce the food, fuel and fiber to feed the world.
Education. Many of our educational support programs outside of our business are directed at youth. We are strong advocates for farm safety and leadership development.
We engage a variety of stakeholders in the development and implementation of our educational programming to have greater impact and reach. Our programs are often developed for youth and youth educators in partnership with not-for-profit organizations. We believe that youth education programs should be based on science, align with curriculum and teach sustainable practices that result in long-term positive change. We also believe in sharing with like-minded partners that can help extend the reach and evolve the programs.
Saosis strives to develop youth in mind, body and spirit through a variety of education programs. We categorize our educational programming into three focus areas: Environmental Education, Agricultural and Nutrient Stewardship Education, and Farm Safety Education. Our success is measured by stakeholder feedback and interest. We continually strive to improve the reach of our programs and the quality of the learning.
