What should you plant in your Garden? A Garden improves the look of the place, provides fresh vegetables and fruits for consumption, provides shade, fresh air, etc. One can start gardening for any of the reasons, according to your needs and convenience. But, the growth of plants depends on – weather conditions, space requirements, soil fertility, availability of water, sunlight, etc. So, you should also select a plant that can thrive well in your garden conditions. To strike a balance between both, many types of gardens were inventively developed.
What should you plant in In-Ground Garden
If you have fertile soil and adequate space, you can grow variety of plants, trees, grass, etc. on the ground. Place plants that require adequate sunlight in a north-south direction. You can plant shade-loving shrubs near the shadowy regions or near trees. Some heavy climbers like melon, pumpkin, etc. thrive well on the ground. If you are planting vegetables, perform crop rotation every 3 years to increase the fertility of the soil. Ideal for large trees, plants with extensive root growth, and space-occupying plants like corn.
When you are planning a garden, add a rain garden that will absorb the excess water from rain and increases your groundwater. Choose a mix of attractive native flowering plants, trees, shrubs, and grasses that can survive in excess water as well as drought. Plants with wide roots will absorb the water effectively within a couple of Plants for days after the rain. Choose swamp rose, swamp sunflower, birch, black willow, etc., for the water-logged area, shrubs like mistflower, primrose, bougainvillea, etc. for the outer dry areas and snowberries, red maple, bottlebrush grass, etc. for the occasionally wet areas in your rain garden.
Raised Bed Garden
When the soil conditions are not suitable for your plants, you can buy or construct a raised bed. A raised bed is a wooden frame of desirable height placed above the ground, or on a hard surface and is filled with a mixture of loose, fertile soil and compost. While beds are kept spaced and neat, plants in a bed are generally grown closer to utilize the space. Two or more plants can be combined in a plot if their growth pattern and requirements do not conflict. You can grow a variety of flowering plants, shrubs, small trees, herbs based on the size and depth of the bed. For e.g. sunflower, peas, greens, cabbage, dwarf citrus, etc. For weak plants and climbers like tomato, beans, provide vertical support so that they do not occupy ground space.
When living in a house with no yard space, you can create a garden on your terrace with pots and containers. Since it will expose to the wind and extreme weather conditions, keep that in mind while choosing the plants. Since it’s on the roof, choose light-weight plants with not much root growth and suitable for the container. Figs harvest best when we restrict their roots. So it is ideal for container gardening. Eggplant, papaya, cilantro, vines, roses, lantana, grass, and other plants that require drained soil. You can plant these on a roof garden.
An indoor Garden
In apartments with limited space, you can grow houseplants inside the house, with or without light and water. You
can also grow plants without soil using hydroponics. Vegetables and fruit plants require at least 15 hours of sunlight. So it is best to keep them in the veranda to get sunlight or use simulated light. You can grow Greens, herbs, carrot, potato, dwarf fruit trees, berries, currants, grapes, etc. indoors with adequate sunlight. Plants like an African violet, peace lily, primrose, wallflower, etc. require partial light and can be grown on or near windows. You can grow some plants inside without sunlight like areca palm, umbrella palm, philodendron, etc. Plants like cactus, lithops, desert rose, etc. require less water.
